In trades and construction, trust is often built long before the quote is accepted.

That came through clearly in my conversation with Mark Turnham from Virtue Fire Solutions on Built. Trusted. Chosen. Mark’s business works in fire protection and essential safety services, which means a lot of the work can sit in the “necessary compliance” bucket for clients. It is something they need, but often hope they never have to rely on.

But as Mark explained, fire safety is not just about ticking boxes. It is about people, property, business continuity, insurance confidence, and making sure systems actually work when they are needed most.

Mark brings a unique mix of experience to the conversation. He joined the Royal Australian Navy after leaving school, later became a fire sprinkler fitter, spent time in asset and facilities management, and has been a volunteer firefighter for almost 20 years. That mix gives him a practical understanding of both sides of fire safety: preventing fires and responding when they happen.

## Fire safety is not just compliance. It is about protecting lives, property, insurance confidence, and business continuity.

One of the strongest points Mark made is that fire safety can easily be seen as just another business expense.

For many building owners, facilities managers and construction leaders, fire maintenance does not feel like something that directly creates profit. It is a cost. It is required. It sits quietly in the background.

But if a system fails, the consequences can be severe.

Mark spoke about the importance of having confidence that extinguishers, hose reels, sprinkler systems and other fire safety assets will work correctly if they are ever needed. The first priority is preservation of life. After that, there is also the protection of property, business operations and insurance confidence.

It is a good reminder for construction and trade businesses that compliance work often has value that is not obvious until pressure hits.

## The best sales process often starts with education. Mark focuses on explaining why standards, testing, and maintenance matter.

Mark does not seem to approach sales with pressure or hype.

Instead, his process is built around education. He talked about helping clients understand why testing is done, what standards require, and what insurers may ask for if something goes wrong.

That matters because many clients know they need to meet compliance obligations, but they may not understand the reasons behind them. They may not know what an Annual Essential Safety Measures report involves. They may not understand what records will be needed if there is an incident.

For trades and construction businesses, this is a valuable lesson.

When a client sees your work as a cost, education can help them see the risk, the value and the reason behind the process. It shifts the conversation from “you need to pay for this” to “this protects your people, your building and your ability to keep operating”.

## “The quiet force behind fire safety” works because it reflects the way Mark leads: no fluff, no hype, just detail, reliability, and care.

I asked Mark about the phrase on the Virtue Fire Solutions website: “the quiet force behind fire safety”.

It stood out to me because it felt authentic.

Mark described himself as more introverted, but deeply passionate about the fire industry. His approach is not about being loud, flashy or overly sales-focused. It is about facts, standards, reliability and doing the work properly.

 That is powerful positioning.

Not every business needs a loud brand. Some businesses build trust through quiet competence. In industries where safety, compliance and reliability matter, a calm and steady brand can be far more believable than big promises.

For a founder-led business, your brand should reflect your values. Mark’s does.

## Relationships built over years can become your strongest growth channel. Mark’s early work came from people who trusted him long before Virtue Fire existed.

Mark started Virtue Fire Solutions in 2020, right in the middle of a difficult and uncertain period.

He and his partner Melanie had worked through the finances, knew they had a window of savings, and decided to give the business a go. Mark put a post on LinkedIn saying he had gone out on his own, and the work began from there.

What stood out was how many people reached out because they already trusted him.

Some had worked with him 10 or 15 years earlier. They remembered how he operated. They trusted his honesty, his technical ability and the way he handled himself.

That is a huge lesson for any trade or construction business owner.

The way you treat people today may become your future pipeline. The small moments matter. The frustrating jobs matter. The relationships that do not seem commercially important today may become significant years later.

## Referrals grow when you help first, answer the phone, and avoid burning bridges.

Mark made a simple but important point: don’t burn bridges.

Virtue Fire Solutions has grown strongly through word of mouth. Mark said they have not relied on cold calling or heavy advertising. Instead, clients and contacts have recommended them.

But those referrals do not happen by accident.

Mark spoke about helping people even when there is no immediate dollar value. Someone might call and ask for advice. Someone might send an email and ask whether they are on the right track. That might take time, but it can build trust that leads to work months or years later.

He also talked about answering the phone when people need help, even outside normal hours.

For trades and construction businesses, this is simple but not always easy. Be helpful. Be calm. Be reliable. Thank the people who refer you. Treat small jobs with respect because you never know where they will lead.

## Hiring is not just about qualifications. In a reputation-led trade business, attitude, communication, and cultural fit matter deeply.

As Virtue Fire Solutions has grown, Mark has had to think carefully about hiring.

He now has a team, but he made the point that qualifications are only part of the equation. In a service business, employees are the face of the company. They are the people on site. They represent the brand in the way they speak, present themselves and solve problems.

Mark has been deliberately slow with hiring because cultural fit matters.

He wants people who communicate well, take ownership, and do what needs to be done. He pushed back on the attitude of “that’s not my job”, because in a smaller business, looking after the client often means being willing to help, investigate, communicate and follow through.

That is especially important when a business is still closely connected to the founder’s personal reputation. Mark knows that clients often still think of the business through him, so the team needs to carry the same standards.

The big message from this conversation is that trust is not built by one marketing campaign.

It is built through the way you work, the way you help, the way you communicate, and the way you handle pressure when something goes wrong.

Mark Turnham and Virtue Fire Solutions are a great example of a business growing through quiet competence, strong values and long-term relationships.
